Facility Details

Urban Central Region

The Central region covers four hospitals, TeleEM and overlaps Layton Hospital (in the Northern region). Our group of diverse physicians is large, but we all know each other well, with interests ranging from pure clinical practice to involvement with teaching and administration. Outside interests are broad, encompassing outdoor recreation, team sports, family, church, and the arts. Physicians live across the region from Park City to Sandy, Bountiful to Riverton.

  • Medical Director: Tom Nelson (UEP since 2018)
    • Enjoys skiing, mountain biking, gardening, reading Kurt Vonnegut, and IPAs when not with his two young sons.
  • Facility Overview: Tertiary referral, Level 1 trauma center in Murray, ~90,000 annual patients (74 beds).
  • Key Aspects: Flagship ED for Canyons Region, comprehensive resources for critical patients, diverse pathology, and strong team support. Ideal for those who thrive in fast-paced, complex environments.
  • Coverage: Divided into 4 zones (Accelerated Care, Zones 1-3) with varied physician/APP coverage. PPH aims for 1.5-2.

  • Medical Director: Mike McLaughlin (28 years with UEP/WEPCO)
    • Enjoys hiking with dogs, family travel, mountain biking, cooking, sports, and University of Utah athletics.
  • Facility Overview: Level 4 trauma in Sandy, UT, ~24,000 annual patients. Community hospital with most specialties.
  • Key Aspects: High elderly patient volume, 13% pediatric, no inpatient peds. Proximity to canyons leads to many ski/snowboarding accidents. Well-designed ED with low staff turnover.
  • Coverage: 4 physician shifts daily, 1 APP shift. PPH 1.5-2.

  • Medical Director: Spencer Proctor (15 years with UEP)
    • Enjoys golf, hiking, vacations, and is an Ohio State Buckeyes fan. Known for driving to work despite living close enough to walk.
  • Facility Overview: Level 4 trauma, ~34,000 annual visits.
  • Key Aspects: Historically high pediatric volume. Physicians value the fast pace, efficient environment, "bread and butter" EM, and strong staff/colleague camaraderie.
  • Coverage: Physician-only, mostly 8-hour shifts. PPH averages 1.8-2.

LDS Hospital

  • Medical Director: Caroline Vines (with UEP since 2012, Director since 2019)
    • Focuses on physician advocacy and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Facility Overview: Level 4 trauma, ~20,000 annual visits. New hospital (2026) anticipates a 30% volume increase.
  • Key Aspects: Strong partnership with Behavioral Health Access Center; home to the Bone Marrow Transplant team. Physicians appreciate the strong staff/consultant culture and the manageable pace.

  • Medical Director: Joel Taylor (17 years with UEP) 
    • Enjoys travel and time with family
  • Service Overview: Currently supporting patient referrals from all InstaCares in the state of Utah and ConnectCare. 2026 projected call volume: >4000 calls

  • Coverage:  Single physician, with RN and MA support. Many opportunities on the horizon for further expansion. 

Northern Region

The northern UEP region serves McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden and Layton Hospital in Layton. All northern physicians work shifts at both hospitals, fostering close communication and camaraderie. Our diverse physician group resides across Northern Utah, including Eden/Huntsville (near Pineview Lake), Mountain Green (in Weber Canyon), Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, and Davis County. Some also commute from the Salt Lake area.

  • ED Director: Jed Southwick (9 years as Director)
    • Enjoys water skiing, snow skiing, Buckeye football, and family travel. Lives in Ogden Valley near Snowbasin.
  • Facility Overview: Tertiary referral, Level 2 trauma center in Ogden, UT. ~60,000 annual visits, the highest pediatric ED volume outside Primary Children's. 35 ED treatment rooms.
  • Key Aspects: Community hospital with referrals from Northern Utah and Southern Idaho. Excellent collegiality among ED and specialist colleagues. A great place to see all types of patients with specialty backup in a community ED atmosphere.
  • Coverage: 10 physician shifts/day, 2 APP shifts/day. Always staffed with at least 2 physicians. All 8-hour shifts. PPH averages ~1.8.

  • ED Director: Cabe Clark (3 years as Director)
    • Enjoys wake surfing, dirt biking, hiking, backpacking, and fishing; eager to connect for outdoor adventures.
  • Facility Overview: Community hospital in Layton, UT, ~32,000 annual patients (20% pediatric), increasing volumes. 26 ED beds, 43 inpatient beds.
  • Key Aspects: Exceptional team environment and highly praised nursing staff and CCTs. A diverse patient mix offers a rewarding practice.
  • Staffing: 5 physician and 2 APP shifts/24 hrs, 8-hour shifts. Average PPH 1.8. Staffing handles peak evening volumes effectively.

Bear River Valley Hospital

  • Medical Director:  Dr. Jonathan Gochnour (Director since 2025). Lives in Cache Valley with wife and four kids; enjoys boating, snowmobiling, and pack trips with four horses.
  • Facility Overview: Level IV trauma center in Tremonton, UT, off I-15. Serves a large catchment area in Box Elder County and Southern Idaho. Features six ED beds and ten inpatient medical beds.
  • Key Aspects: Rural feel with limited nurse turnover. Appreciated by staff and administration for having board-certified EM physicians. Utilizes telemedicine to manage admitted patients and minimize transfers.
  • Coverage: 24-hour physician coverage with 12-to-24-hour shifts (24-hour preferred). Occasional solo APP coverage, supported by local FM physicians. Plans for daily mid-shift APP coverage.

Bear River Valley Hospital

  • Medical Director: Dr. Taryn Collins (Director for 2 years). Married with four kids; enjoys e-bike rides, hunting, snowmobiling, and skiing.
  • Facility Overview: Critical access hospital in Burley, ID, located on the Snake River.
  • Key Aspects: Tight-knit group of 4 physicians and 2 APPs. Known as the go-to service for critical care, seeing a wide variety of trauma and pathology despite being a smaller hospital. Offers excellent work-life balance and access to world-class hunting, fishing, skiing, and water sports.
  • Coverage: 24-hour physician shifts with nighttime APP support. Staffed with 3 nurses at all times and a support tech during the swing shift.
